May Angels Guard You Whilst You Sleep

A few selected pieces from my first university project - 'May Angels Guard You Whilst You Sleep'. Inspired by Xing Ding, this project took influence from the idea of a 'safe haven', and creating a form of protection through fashion.
Fear of Imprisonment.
I am interested in protection and the idea of a safe haven from a religious point of view, which is why I decided to look into Buddhism. After researching their beliefs and practices, I became very interested in Tara, the eight Buddhist fears. These are represented through many different symbols often found in Buddhist art. However, I wanted to portray these in a less literal sense, which I have began to experiment with through my designs.

Fear Of Floods.

Fear of Ignorance.

After completing my initial research I began to sketch some ideas out based on my theme. I particularly liked the pleating structures and cage like shape created through the crinoline. These were ideas that helped me to move forward with my designs.

Mood Board Development.

After the research stage I began to put together some mood boards to portray my theme through the use of CAD. These boards represent my inspiration and helped aid my design process.

After discovering my theme and sketching initial designs, I began to look into possible fabrics and colours. I decided to keep my collection quite minimal, so I kept to basic colours as I felt this would make the shape and structure of the garment stand out more. I also looked into fabrics such as PVC, leather, dupion silk and felt.

Fashion Illustration Development.

Here I began to draw up some illustrations based around my theme. I wanted to interpret the pleats and harsh structures I had used in my designs, whilst staying true to the mood.
